The Process

This is a production guideline. It is ultimately up to each director to decide the goal of their efforts and how best they can achieve that goal.

  • Each director selects two to four improvisers or actors whom they would like to direct in their short.
  • Each director selects the location for their short. For simplicity, a single location is recommended.
  • Each director selects a theme or story template (example: boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back.) Recommended story templates are provided to each director.
  • Each director selects a shooter who will operate the camera. Or the director may be their own shooter.
  • Four to five major plot beats are work-shopped by the director and cast.
  • Based on the work-shopped beats, the cast improvises the scene on location; the shooter shoots it.
  • Each director selects an editor who will edit the scene. Or the director may be their own editor.
  • If desired, each director selects a musical improviser to score the scene. Or the director may improvise their own score.
  • The finished product should be between five and seven minutes.

The deadline is one week prior to the screening.
